Does a Suntan Affect Healing?

Sun exposure can cause scars to lighten or darken (hypo or hyper pigmented). Which might occur is not completely predictable. As a result, avoiding sun exposure on new scars is an excellent way to minimize the appearance of scars.

Clinical Context

New scars have immature pigment cells that are more sensitive to sunlight than normal skin. This can cause a scar to become darker or lighter than the skin around it, and it's hard to predict which will happen. Protecting a healing scar from the sun—with clothing or a broad-spectrum sunscreen—helps it blend in better as it matures over the following months.
