Does the Amount of Botox Injection Depend on Race or Ethnicity?
Fantastic question. The largest contributing factor to differences in Botox treatment and results in patients of different ethnic diversity has to do with the thickness of the dermis. Different ethnicities tend to have thicker or thinner skin thickness. Patients with thicker skin are more resistant to getting the wrinkles that Botox is designed to treat in the first place however once they do get them can require larger amounts of Botox to get good correction of the wrinkles. Typically darker pigmented skin types can have thicker dermis.
Clinical Context
Botox dosing is always individualized, not just based on skin type or ethnicity. Your provider examines your specific facial muscles, how they move, and your skin quality to determine the right amount. Because muscle strength and skin thickness vary from person to person, results are reassessed at follow-up visits, and adjustments can be made over time to achieve smooth, natural-looking correction without over- or under-treating any area of the forehead or brow.
