Double vision after Botox - advice?
Double vision after botox treatment is uncommon. Typically this results from injection placement too close to the eye, which may diffuse into the orbit and cause temporary weakening of the muscles that control eye movement. If you experience double vision or any new visual disturbance after treatment, this should not wait. Contact your treating physician right away and arrange for same-day evaluation, either with your injector's physician or an ophthalmologist, to make sure there is no other cause and to guide appropriate management. Once evaluated and other causes are ruled out, double vision from botox typically resolves gradually over the following weeks as the effect wears off. Afterward, it is reasonable to discuss with your injector whether treatment technique should be adjusted, or to seek a second opinion from another experienced, board-certified provider for future treatments.
Clinical Context
Double vision from Botox happens when the toxin spreads into the small muscles that move the eye, temporarily weakening them. Like other Botox effects, this usually fades gradually over the following weeks to months as the toxin wears off. Because sudden double vision can also come from unrelated causes, it's worth telling your doctor exactly when the injection was given and when symptoms began, and seeing an ophthalmologist promptly if it doesn't improve.
