Filing Down the Dorsal Hump?

If your only concern is a dorsal hump, a closed rhinoplasty can be an excellent way to address the contour of the nasal dorsum, and in selected cases the hump can be reduced with techniques such as rasping. Rhinoplasty is a very complex procedure, however, and treating the hump is only one part of the overall assessment. The balance, shape, and structural relationships of the nose with the rest of the face are critical considerations when determining what should—and should not—be changed. In our practice in Dublin, California, we spend significant time analyzing the face and nasal anatomy as a whole before recommending a surgical approach. The goal is not simply to remove a hump, but to create a nose that is balanced and naturally integrated with the rest of the face.

Clinical Context

After hump reduction, the bridge often takes longer to show its final shape than other parts of the nose. Swelling resolves gradually, and skin needs time to redrape over the new contour—patients with thicker skin may notice this takes longer. It's normal for the bridge to look slightly different at a few weeks than it will months later as swelling fully settles. Patience during healing helps you judge the true final result rather than an early snapshot.
