How Long Should You Wear Your Binder/Garment for After a Tummy Tuck?

For a tummy tuck, most patients wear their compression garment for about four to six weeks, though your surgeon may extend that depending on how much abdominal wall repair (plication) was done and how you're healing. The garment serves two main purposes. First, it applies steady pressure to the abdomen, helping close off the space created when the skin flap is elevated, which reduces the risk of fluid collecting there (seroma). Second, it supports the muscle repair and helps the skin redrape smoothly against the new contour while swelling resolves.

Early on, most of the benefit is mechanical support for the repair. Later weeks are more about managing residual swelling, which can wax and wane for months regardless of garment use. Tolerance varies. Patients who can comfortably wear the garment a bit longer, within reason, often notice a smoother final result. Your surgeon will tailor the exact timeline to your procedure and healing, so follow their specific instructions over any general rule.

Clinical Context

Garments help most in the first few weeks, when compression supports tissue healing and reduces fluid buildup under the skin. As swelling settles, continued wear can help skin lie smoothly against the new shape. Comfort and healing speed vary, so some patients wear garments longer than others. Always follow your surgeon's specific instructions, since they factor in your incision, muscle repair, and recovery progress.
