How Many Botox Units Are Needed for Upper Lip Plumping?

Botox isn't actually the tool for plumping lips – that's a volume job, and volume comes from fillers like hyaluronic acid gels, not from a neuromodulator. What Botox can do is a "lip flip," where a small dose is placed into the orbicularis oris muscle around the upper lip. This relaxes the muscle just enough that it rolls slightly outward, giving the appearance of a bit more show without adding actual volume. The dose for this is quite small compared to what's used for frown lines, since the goal is subtle relaxation, not paralysis. It's a temporary effect, lasting several weeks like Botox elsewhere. If true fullness is what you're after, a filler consultation would serve you better. Either way, exam in person matters here, since lip anatomy varies a lot and the right approach depends on what you're actually trying to achieve.

Clinical Context

Because the mouth muscles overlap with those used for smiling, pursing, and drinking through a straw, injecting too much Botox or placing it too deep can temporarily affect nearby muscle function. Possible side effects include a crooked smile, trouble whistling, or difficulty sipping from a straw until the effect wears off. These issues are uncommon with careful placement but are worth discussing with your injector, along with how long results typically last for you.
