How many times do I need Botox in my chewing muscles before I get permanent results, or do I need injections frequently?
That is a great question. Botox and all other neuromodulators have a TEMPORARY result. Over time with multiple treatments, the masseter muscle will eventually atrophy and become smaller and weaker; however, depending on the cause of masseter hypertrophy (grinding, clenching, stress, mouthguard use, etc.), the muscle will eventually respond and adapt to that and gradually become bulkier without Botox to "keep it quiet." As with any muscle, it has a the potential to become stronger with repetitive exercise (think abs, biceps, etc.) despite a period of atrophy/disuse. After several treatments, you may not require treatments as frequently or as many units to maintain your results but be aware that it is not a permanent result. I hope that makes sense and offered some clarity. Make sure to see an experienced, board-certified provider.
Clinical Context
Whether masseter Botox ever becomes permanent hinges on muscle behavior, not injection count. Repeated sessions can train the muscle to stay smaller between treatments, since less bulk redevelops each time nerve signaling returns, but the muscle fibers themselves aren't eliminated. That means maintenance intervals often stretch out over years of consistent treatment, yet stopping entirely usually allows gradual regrowth. Most people settle into treatments roughly every six to twelve months long-term, rather than reaching a true endpoint.
