I have had breast implants for 14 years. How Long Do Breast Implants Last?
Breast implants are not lifetime devices, but they also don't have an expiration date stamped on them. The commonly cited figure is that many patients will need some kind of additional surgery within 10-15 years, but that number lumps together all reasons for reoperation: rupture, capsular contracture, size change, or simply wanting them out. Implant shells have improved over the decades, so older data may not fully apply to newer devices.
At 14 years, the practical issue is monitoring, not an automatic swap. If you have saline implants, rupture is usually obvious because the breast visibly deflates as saline is absorbed by the body. Silicone rupture can be silent, which is why the FDA recommends ultrasound or MRI screening starting around five to six years after surgery, then every two to three years after that.
If you haven't had any imaging or a checkup since your original surgery, that's a reasonable next step. A board-certified plastic surgeon can examine you and help decide whether imaging or replacement makes sense.
Clinical Context
Implant longevity isn't only about the shell. The scar capsule that forms around any implant can thicken or tighten over years, changing how the breast feels or looks even if the implant itself is fine. Weight changes, pregnancy, and normal aging of skin and tissue also affect appearance over time, often more noticeably than the implant itself. These factors are separate from rupture risk and are part of why long-term follow-up matters, regardless of implant type or how many years have passed since surgery.
