Is it safe to get a massage a week after Botox injections for forehead lines?

Generally speaking, we advise our patients not to massage the treatment area for 24 hours and to stay upright for 4 hours. This is because Botox needs time to bind to the nerve endings at the injection site, and pressure or rubbing during that window can shift it into muscles we did not intend to treat. Once it has bound, it stays put.

Massage 1 week later should not be a problem, since by then the product has settled into place and the treated muscles have already adjusted to their new activity level. You may notice the full effect is still developing at that point, as it typically takes up to two weeks to see the final result. If you notice unusual drooping, asymmetry, or heaviness in the forehead or eyelids, that is worth a call to our office.

Clinical Context

Botox works by binding to nerve endings near the injection site, which limits its spread once it takes effect. This is why avoiding pressure or massage in the first day helps keep the product where it was placed. After the initial binding period, the treated muscles settle into their new activity level, so normal activities like massage no longer affect how the treatment works.
