Pain, Hardness, Difficulty Smiling After Restylane Lip Injections

Restylane has lidocaine in it that can alleviate pain for a couple of hours. After it wears off, the treated area can definitely feel sore. The tenderness and firmness usually improve over the next few days as the swelling decreases. You can apply a cold pack to your lips to help alleviate the tenderness, but do not place it directly on your skin. Head elevation can also help reduce swelling. Give it some time and things will likely get better. If there is anything that concerns you, definitely contact your injector.

Clinical Context

Restylane is made of hyaluronic acid, which naturally attracts and holds water once placed in the skin. This, along with the body's normal response to the needle, causes temporary swelling and firmness in the lips. As the swelling increases, the lips can feel tight or stiff, making smiling or talking feel more restricted for a few days. This typically resolves on its own as the swelling goes down and the filler settles into place.
