Pain, Tightness Around the Upper Part of My Breast?
Pain or a feeling of tightness in the upper portion of the breast can be common after breast augmentation, particularly during the first several weeks. The breast tissue and chest muscle are adjusting to the implant, and swelling and stretching of the tissues can create a sensation of pressure, tightness, or soreness. This can be especially noticeable when the implants are placed under the chest muscle. The muscle has to stretch to accommodate the implant, which can make the upper chest feel tight or uncomfortable during the early healing period. As healing progresses, the swelling generally decreases, the tissues relax, and the implants begin to settle into a more natural position. One breast may also heal faster than the other, so it isn't unusual for one side to feel tighter or more uncomfortable temporarily. However, persistent or worsening tightness can sometimes have another cause. For example, capsular contracture occurs when the scar tissue surrounding an implant becomes unusually thick or tight. It can cause the breast to feel firm, look different, become painful, or sit higher than the other breast. Treatments can involve medications like singulair but typically require surgical revision. The implants should probably be replaced and the scar tissue removed. In cases where the capsular contracture has recurred a dermal matrix can be added to reduce the recurrence.
Clinical Context
Tightness in the upper breast after augmentation is common because that area sits closest to the collarbone, where swelling and healing tissue are most noticeable early on. Implants placed under the muscle create more pressure there at first, before the muscle gradually relaxes and tissues settle. This usually improves over the first several weeks. If tightness increases instead of easing, or the breast feels firm or changes shape, mention it to your surgeon so other causes can be checked.
