Should I get Botox before my filler for my chin? Will the filler last longer?

Botox first can help, but it's not a strict requirement. The chin's mentalis muscle is a strong, constantly moving muscle that can push and metabolize filler faster. Relaxing it with Botox a couple weeks before filler reduces that mechanical stress, so the filler tends to hold its shape and position longer. That said, both can be done the same day if needed. Botox and filler are also addressing different problems: Botox smooths the pebbled, overactive muscle look, while filler adds volume to balance a recessed chin. Some patients even notice their muscle overactivity improve after filler alone, a phenomenon called myomodulation. The right approach depends on why the chin looks retracted in the first place: dental issues, genetics, or bone structure all play a role. A board-certified plastic surgeon can look at your chin and profile in person and map out the right sequence and product for your goals.

Clinical Context

Botox and filler work differently: Botox relaxes muscle movement, filler adds volume. Treating an overactive chin muscle first can help filler stay in place longer, since less motion means less mechanical stress on the product. Many injectors sequence Botox before filler for this reason, though some patients do well with both on the same day. Your surgeon will decide the best order based on your muscle activity and goals.
