Should Saline Implants Be Replaced over Time-its Been 9 Years?
There's no expiration date stamped on a saline implant, and nine years alone isn't a reason to replace it. Saline is different from silicone in this regard: if a saline implant ruptures, your body simply absorbs the saltwater and the breast visibly deflates over a day or two. That's your signal to act, not a screening MRI. Silicone implants require periodic imaging to check for silent rupture; saline implants generally announce themselves.
That said, if you're noticing rippling, asymmetry, or a change in shape, those are separate issues from rupture risk and worth addressing on their own. Rippling with saline is common, especially in thinner-tissue patients, and switching to silicone gel, adding acellular dermal matrix for coverage, or fat grafting can all improve the contour. Whether any of that is covered by insurance depends on whether your original surgery was reconstructive or cosmetic. Saline implants don't have a fixed lifespan, but the tissue around them can change over many years. The capsule your body forms around the implant may thin or tighten unevenly, and breast tissue itself can thin with age or weight change. These shifts, not the implant's age, are usually what cause new rippling or shape changes a decade or more after surgery. A plastic surgeon can examine your tissue and capsule to determine the cause.
