Underwire Bra and Breast Implants, Safe?
Yes. Women with breast implants can safely wear underwire bras once their breasts have healed, and there is no need to avoid underwire bras permanently. The main concern is how soon you wear an underwire bra after surgery. During the early healing period, the implant is still settling into its pocket and the incision—particularly an incision underneath the breast—may still be healing. An underwire can put pressure directly on the incision, cause irritation, or potentially interfere with the desired position of the implant. Our Dublin practice suggests waiting approximately 6 weeks before wearing an underwire bra after breast augmentation, although recommendations can range from about 4 weeks to 3 months depending on the procedure and the surgeon's preferences. Once your incisions are completely healed and your implants have settled, you should generally be able to wear whatever type of bra is comfortable, including an underwire or push-up bra.
Clinical Context
Healing time varies by patient and by procedure. Where your incision is located matters—an incision under the breast sits right where an underwire rests, while incisions elsewhere are less affected. Whether the implant is placed above or below the muscle can also change how soon pressure feels comfortable. Your surgeon's specific timeline accounts for these factors, so it's worth confirming your personal recovery milestones at follow-up visits rather than relying on a general rule.
