What Can I Expect if I Become Pregnant After I Get Breast Implants? Will the Swelling to Be Abnormally Painful?
As your breasts enlarge during pregnancy, you may experience increased breast fullness, tenderness, sensitivity, and swelling. These changes are a normal part of pregnancy and are not necessarily caused by the implants. The amount of discomfort varies considerably from woman to woman, and having implants does not mean that breast swelling during pregnancy will be abnormally painful. Pregnancy can also change the appearance of augmented breasts. The natural breast tissue and skin may stretch as the breasts enlarge and then decrease in size after pregnancy or breastfeeding. This can result in sagging, changes in breast shape, or a different relationship between the breast tissue and the implant. It is also possible for your breasts to become temporarily quite large and firm during pregnancy or while producing milk. This does not necessarily mean there is a problem with the implants.
Clinical Context
Breast changes during pregnancy and breastfeeding—fullness, tenderness, and size shifts—happen because of hormonal and glandular changes, not because of the implants themselves. These changes affect both augmented and natural breasts. Skin and tissue stretching during milk production can temporarily alter breast size, firmness, or shape, and some sagging or asymmetry may remain afterward. Implants do not prevent or worsen these normal pregnancy-related changes, and most women are able to breastfeed successfully with implants in place.
