What does it mean when Botox weakens muscles?

Botox and Dysport work by disrupting the communication between nerve cells and muscle cells. This is an irreversible process at the neuromuscular junction but eventually new nerve terminals will develop over the next few months. By preventing/reducing muscular movement, this reduces the pull on the overlying skin resulting in decreased wrinkles.

Clinical Context

Botox doesn't work immediately. Most people see softening within three to five days, with the full effect visible by about two weeks as the treated muscle gradually stops receiving nerve signals. The effect fades because the nerve ending regenerates — new sprouts grow out and reconnect to the muscle, which is why movement returns slowly over a few months rather than all at once. This gradual return is a normal part of how the treatment wears off, not a sign anything went wrong.
