What is the difference between Juvederm and Juvederm Voluma?
Voluma and standard Juvederm (Ultra, Ultra Plus) are both hyaluronic acid fillers, but they're engineered differently. Voluma uses a different manufacturing process that creates a stiffer, more cohesive gel, giving it more structural firmness and lift. That makes it well suited for the cheeks, where you need a product that can support tissue and hold volume over time, often a year or more. Standard Juvederm is softer and more pliable, which makes it a better choice for lips, nasolabial folds, and finer lines where you want smooth, natural movement rather than rigid lift. Other fillers like Restylane and Belotero are also commonly used in the lips. Belotero has a lighter, more spreadable consistency and, contrary to older information floating around, current formulations do contain lidocaine for comfort. The right product depends on the area being treated and the result you're after. Best assessed at a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon who can match the filler to your anatomy.
Clinical Context
Filler safety depends heavily on where and how deep a product is injected, not just which brand is used. Firmer fillers like Voluma are usually placed deep, near bone, while softer fillers sit closer to the surface. Areas like the nasolabial folds, tear troughs, and glabella have more blood vessels nearby, so any filler placed there carries more risk if injected too close to an artery. All hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with hyaluronidase if needed, though some may take a little longer to fully reverse.
