What is this post-tummy tuck bulge?

There are a few different possibilities of what this bulge might represent. This is often caused by normal post-surgical swelling, seroma or hematoma (pockets of fluid or old blood that collect under the skin), or disrupted internal fat. The good news is most of these problems can be corrected relatively easily. Seek the advice of a board-certified plastic surgeon.

Clinical Context

After a tummy tuck, tissue heals in layers—skin, fat, and the muscle repair beneath—so swelling can take weeks to fully resolve. Fluid can also collect in the space created during surgery, causing a soft, movable bulge that a doctor can often drain in the office. Firmer, less mobile lumps may reflect fat tissue that didn't heal normally. Because these causes look and feel different, an in-person exam is the best way to know which one is present.
