Does Botox Affect Melasma?
Botox will not change melasma. Botox directly interferes with the neuromuscular junction, temporarily relaxing the muscles that cause expression lines. Melasma is characterized by hyperpigmentation, which comes from melanocytes overproducing pigment in response to sun exposure or hormonal changes. The pharmacologic action of Botox is completely unrelated to hyperpigmentation, so it will neither improve nor worsen the discoloration.
