Can Vigorous Activity Lead to an Increased Risk of Saline Implant Rupture?
Implants are designed to withstand physical stress. This includes most standard activity. Things that predispose implants to rupture include manufacturing flaws, underfilling an implant and handling during placement (for example iodine solution has been shown to weaken the shell). There isn't a clear correlation between physical activity and implant rupture however I have had patients come to me with ruptured implants after mammogram or car accidents.
Clinical Context
Saline implants are durable, but any implant can rupture from a strong direct impact, such as a seatbelt injury or fall, especially soon after surgery before scar tissue has fully formed around it. Unlike silicone, a saline rupture is easy to notice: the saline is absorbed by the body, and the breast visibly deflates within days. If you notice sudden size change or asymmetry, contact your surgeon.
