Burn associated with BBL
Burns from BBL usually come from the energy source used to help break down fat before it's suctioned out. Laser-assisted and ultrasonic (Vaser) liposuction devices generate heat, and if that energy is held too long in one spot, or too close to the skin, it can cause a thermal injury ranging from a superficial burn to a deeper full-thickness one. Friction burns can also occur from the cannula itself if there isn't enough tumescent fluid cushioning the tissue as it moves back and forth.
This is an uncommon complication when the procedure is done by someone experienced with the specific device being used, since technique and energy settings matter as much as the equipment. If you're noticing a burn after BBL, don't wait it out, have it evaluated so wound care can start early and scarring is minimized. A board-certified plastic surgeon can also tell you whether traditional tumescent liposuction without added energy is a better fit for your case going forward.
Clinical Context
Burns after energy-assisted liposuction are uncommon and usually reported as individual cases rather than in large studies. When they occur, it's typically because energy lingered too long in one spot or the cannula moved without enough fluid cushioning the tissue. This can happen with any device—laser, ultrasonic, or standard cannula—so a surgeon's experience with that specific technology matters more than which brand is used. Any new skin discoloration, blistering, or pain after liposuction should be checked right away.
