Do I need to stop taking my birth control before my surgery for a BBL/Lypo?

Birth control can increase your risk for DVTs (blood clots in your veins). In addition, compression garments, immobility and general anesthesia can also increase this risk. Usually even with the increased risk it is not significant but different surgeons make take a different approach. At our practice we generally do not ask patients to stop birth control. Ask your doctor!

Clinical Context

Blood clot risk after surgery comes from more than just birth control. Anesthesia and lying still can slow blood flow in the legs, and swelling after liposuction can add pressure on vessels nearby. These factors combine with hormonal birth control's own small clotting effect. That's why staying mobile after surgery, wearing your compression garment correctly, and following your surgeon's activity guidelines all matter alongside any decision about your birth control.
