Is a hematoma unusual after lip augmentation? My surgeon told me to give it two weeks
Thank you for sharing your question. It can be hard to wait for the swelling to resolve but I also encourage you to allow 2 weeks before considering dissolving. You may be pleasantly surprised at the final outcome after the swelling and bruising resolves. The lips are extremely vascular and a hematoma is possible, especially if the product was injected with a needle vs. a cannula. Use cool compresses in the meantime and follow up with your injector at 2 weeks.
That said, if you notice any blanching or white, dusky, or blue discoloration of the skin, severe or worsening pain, coolness of the tissue, vision changes, or any stroke-like symptoms, contact your injector the same day, as these can signal a blocked vessel that can be reversed with hyaluronidase when caught promptly.
Clinical Context
Hematomas after lip injections usually come from small vessel injury at the injection site. The lips carry a rich blood supply, including labial arteries close to the surface, so needles carry more risk of nicking a vessel than blunt cannulas do. Blood thinners and fish oil can prolong bruising. Most collections are small and resolve on their own within one to two weeks with cool compresses. If swelling keeps growing, feels tense or painful, or the lip color changes, contact your injector promptly rather than waiting.
