Juvederm Ultra XC lip injections. My lips have swollen up. What should I do?
Swelling after lip filler is normal. Lips are thin-skinned and highly vascular, so even a small amount of hyaluronic acid causes visible puffiness, and bruising adds to it. Typical swelling peaks in the first day or two and settles over one to two weeks, with ice and head elevation helping in the short term. Without seeing the lips in person, it's hard to know if what you're experiencing is routine swelling or something more.
What should worry you: pain out of proportion to what you'd expect, skin that looks dusky, mottled, or white, or swelling that keeps worsening after the first couple of days. Those can signal vascular compromise from the filler compressing or entering a blood vessel, which is uncommon but needs urgent attention, sometimes with hyaluronidase to dissolve the product. If anything looks or feels off, call the injector who treated you right away rather than waiting it out. A board-certified plastic surgeon can examine you and reassure you, or intervene quickly if needed.
Clinical Context
Different causes of lip swelling after filler look different. Normal swelling is even, soft, and improves steadily over days. An allergic reaction usually itches and can spread beyond the lips. Infection tends to appear later with warmth and worsening redness rather than gradual improvement. Vascular compromise causes unusual pain and color changes—dusky, mottled, or white skin—early after injection and requires urgent evaluation. Recognizing which pattern fits your symptoms helps determine whether reassurance, monitoring, or urgent care is needed.
