Tyndall effect in lips?
That bluish-gray tint under the skin is usually one of two things: a bruise or the Tyndall effect. Bruising is common after lip filler and typically resolves within two weeks as blood breaks down and reabsorbs. The Tyndall effect is different mechanically — it happens when hyaluronic acid filler is placed too superficially, close enough to the skin surface that it scatters light at shorter wavelengths, giving a blue-gray cast rather than a natural flesh tone. This isn't bruising and won't fade on its own the same way.
Give it the full two weeks to rule out simple bruising before assuming it's Tyndall effect. If the discoloration persists past that point, or if it's not painful or tender the way a bruise would be, it's likely due to superficial placement and can be corrected by dissolving the filler with hyaluronidase. A board-certified plastic surgeon or experienced injector can examine the area in person to distinguish between the two and determine the right next step.
Clinical Context
The Tyndall effect happens because lip skin is thin, so any filler sitting too close to the surface shows through as a blue-gray tone rather than blending in. It's specific to hyaluronic acid fillers, which is actually good news: they're reversible. If an injector confirms Tyndall effect rather than bruising, hyaluronidase dissolves the misplaced filler, usually within a day or two, and can be redone deeper once the area has settled.
