What to Expect from Swelling After Juvederm for Lips?
Swelling at your lips after a Juvederm treatment is inevitable. Bruising can occur as well. You should avoid NSAIDs (aspirin, ibuprofen, etc), vitamin E, and fish oil 2 weeks prior to your injection. These products will make you more prone to bleeding and/or bruising. You may also take arnica tablets a few days before and after your procedure to help minimize your chances of bruising and to help swelling resolve. Applying cold packs after the treatment can also aid in reducing swelling. Swelling can persist for up to 3 days after injection, so it might be best to do it when you have a couple of days off of work if you are concerned about being questioned.
Clinical Context
When a patient calls about lip swelling after Juvederm, the first thing checked is symmetry and timing: even puffiness across both lips a day or two out is expected, while swelling that keeps building past 72 hours or looks lopsided gets closer attention. Lip tissue is thin and full of small vessels, so it reacts more visibly than firmer facial areas. Bruising is separate from swelling and follows its own timeline, since it only appears if a vessel was nicked during injection.
